August 26th is National Dog Day

Happy Dog Day to all my Friends!
and all the ones I haven’t met yet too!

My turn to blog again – yippee!

Tink here – and no jokes about yippy little dogs, okay?

I am trying to convince Mom to let me guest blog on more regular days – so help me out here and tell her you always love my posts (even if you actually like all that boring stuff she blogs about, okay?)

I mean what could be BETTER for mental health than cuddling up with an adorable dog who loves you bunches?  What could be more fun than a game of frisbee or fetch?  You have to admit that a walk in nature is a lot better when you take us along, right? WE find things you don’t even notice.

Did you know we’re co-evolved?

Mom says that those science guys she writes about say that since we’ve been domesticated for thousands of years, we’ve evolved to be part of your pack.  (Actually, you’ve evolved to be part of ours, but why kibble quibble over details.)

We really do feel your emotions, and we do our very best to make you feel really great.

Check THIS out:
Your dog really can read your emotions

Our VERY best — every single day

We try really hard to understand what we do that makes you happy and what you don’t like us to do, even when you’re mean to us when you haven’t communicated clearly and consistently enough for us to get it right.

Don’t get me wrong. Mom’s never mean to me, and she’s a pretty good communicator (for us 4-legses and everybody else) – but there are some 2-legses who need a bit of boundary training about how they treat their furry friends, and today is a great day to remind them to get some.

It’s best for us when you don’t ever use your mean voice – and hitting or shaming us is never necessary. We don’t ask for much in return (except maybe for a chance to guest blog a bit more often, Mom).

And, of course, we hope you’ll make sure that we know that you love us too by the patient way you treat us, and because you do things for us that we can’t do without you (like giving us fresh water every day, a comfortable place to get warm and stay cool, feeding us the right amount of healthy food — including lots of healthy TREATS — and giving us toys to play with while you’re busy!!)

We do our best barking to protect you, but today is a very good day to remind you that sometimes we need you to protect us too.

ONE day to remind us all that every day needs to be Dog Day

Today is not one of those regular days, and I’m really glad that Mom turned the blog over to me to tell everybody all about it.  Who better, right?  Far from regular, today is probably THE most important Day of the entire year (except for maybe National Dog Biscuit Day).

There’s even a whole website devoted to just this day — NationalDogDay.com.

This is what they have to say about it:

National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, pure and mixed and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues.

National Dog Day honors family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.

Dogs put their lives on the line every day – for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage.

Here Are 10 Hero Dogs to Celebrate on National Dog Day

Dogs are GREAT protection for children, too — and can even teach them things – and I can prove it.

ADORABLE video from Sally Cronin (my honorary aunt) –
dogs teaching babies to crawl – and more!

NOT to leave out kitties and such

Before I tell you some great ways to celebrate National Dog Day this year I want you to know that, in case you have a cat or something, on the Dogtipper website there is a yearly list of important days for all your fur and feather friends: Pet Holidays.

I keep bugging her about it, but Mom still doesn’t list the most important days on her monthly Mental Health Awareness calendars.  So save that Pet Holidays link up there if you want to make sure you celebrate them (or blog about them).

And if you have some fur-babies waiting for you on Rainbow Bridge (with my cousins), in two more days (August 28th) it’s Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day.

In case you’ve never heard about Rainbow Bridge, click under the picture right over there to read all about it.

It’s really cool — but make sure you have some Kleenex™ handy if you’re one of those 2-legses who cries at practically everything (Mom says it’s very touching).

On with the fun!

8 Ways to celebrate today . . .

  1. Play a little longer – I hardly ever get enough Frisbee time, so this would be a really great way to celebrate with me(hint-hint, Mom!)

  2. Take us on an extra walk – and make every walk today just a little bit longer, so we have plenty of time to stop and sniff.
  3. Brush out our tangles – and take extra time to go all the way in.  Matted and tangled fur pulls at our tender skin and makes us itch.  Cut through the stubborn mats, then carefully and gently brush them out.
  4. Wash all our bedding so that we get to sleep or nap where it’s all clean and fluffy.
  5. Let us out of jail.  Take a personal day at your work and stay home, so we don’t have to spend any time in a crate today. Or take us to Doggy Day Care – or hire a dog sitter until you get home from work.

  6. Fix us our favorite food – no health food chunks for me today, Mom.  I want boiled chicken and veggies.
  7. Bring on the treats!  Play some doggie games and reward us every time we win (which of course we will). Teach us a new trick — and reward each step with more treats (or fork over the treats just for being our adorable selves).
  8. Throw us a party! Invite a few of your 2-legged friends to bring their 4-legses and take us all to the park.  Don’t forget the picnic – and plenty of balls, frisbees and water.  (Did I mention that we love treats?)

And Speaking of Parties . . .

Mom’s blogger-author-publisher friend (and now MY honorary aunt) Sally Cronin is throwing a big drop-by-when-you-can end-of-summer bash ALL weekend, starting today (over at her Smorgasbord Invitation blog). Mom and I are going to be popping in and out to celebrate Dog Day over there – my first big party.  JOIN US!

You don’t want to miss the event of the season, do you? There’ll be lots of 2-legged blogger/writer types you’ll probably want to meet and greet, but I’m counting on my fur-friends to add a little balance to the party (and drag your 2-legses with you).  Oh, and Mom’s other friends are invited too, of course.

Mom’s gonna’ be dressed to the virtual nines, and I’m all clean and fluffy already – but you can even come in your virtual jammies if you want to. Sally’s fixing the virtual snacks NOW, so get there before everything starts getting virtually sparse!  Practice your moves – there’s gonna’ be music (and snacks!)

5 ways to celebrate if you don’t have a dog

  1. Thinking about getting a new best friend?  Spend some time today checking out what’s available in your local shelter or, if you really want a certain kind, research breed-rescue organizations on your computer and get your name on their lists.
  2. Love all dogs but can’t have any right now?  Give a donation to your local shelter.  Even $5 helps. Go to the pound and play with the ones who are waiting for their forever homes. Every fun day makes them all the more likely to be adopted. If you can afford it, buy some toys to leave behind.
  3. Donate your old towels and pillows to your vet or to a shelter in the name of a former pet – even one when you were a little 2-legs.  Make sure you run them through the washing machine first.
  4. Write your law-maker 2-legses and tell them you want stronger laws against puppy mills and dog fight rings and doggie gas chambers.
  5. Call all your friends who live with us and remind them to celebrate today – and to do something WONDERFUL with their puppies.

Have the very best Dog Day EVER!

HAPPY DOG DAY EVERYBODY!!

Let me know how you plan to celebrate today – or how you did.

And be sure to leave me a link if you have written your own National Dog Day post and I’ll move it up into my Relateds.

And don’t forget to join us at the End of Summer BASH!

    • NO, honey – you are still on ADDandSoMuchMore.com and left your links on TINK’s post – you are NOT at Sally’s party, so none of her other guests will ever see your links.

You have to scroll TO the links, mouse over them and CLICK to get to Sally’s Party. Tink left you a link to MY post with all 3 links – did you see it? Did you click it?

I know I must sound like a nag, but you REALLY DO need to take the free WordPress blogging course. It is clear that you are missing some absolute basics that will keep your blogging dreams forever out of reach until you learn them.

I’m sure there are books, too – search on Amazon to see if you can find one. It has GOT to be frustrating for you, and it really doesn’t have to be.

Are you going to Day 3 of Sally’s party today? We’re heading over after my walk (as soon as Mom drinks coffee, of course – nothing happens before coffee, not even breakfast.).

            • Scroll down to the pink flowers on the Smorgasbord Party graphic at the bottom of her actual Impulsivity/Anger article (not the stuff that’s always on the bottom of every post, like the Related Content links and stuff)

The links to the party follow the words, in bold “In case you missed the first two days:” (no quotes, of course)

PS. Since you left this comment on MY post (the Dog Day one), you are NOT on the right one for these instructions. The link to Party-1 (only) is in the middle of my article – following the same graphic with the pink flower.

    • Thanks, you guys. WOW – four cats in the house now. A dog would barely stand a chance – and I’ll bet a burglar wouldn’t either.

I had a great Dog Day. Mom made my fur all smooth and even got my face brushed out. I played frisbee and took a walk on a new route (and I got to stop and sniff as long as I wanted). I had a special yummie dinner – AND treats! We stopped in on my Cheers bar when we passed it on my night walk. They didn’t even know it was Dog Day, can you believe it? Then Mom got to talking with a couple of her friends and, well, you can imagine. We just got home. Really LATE. So I have to go to bed just as soon as I approve my comments.

Will I see you at Sally’s party later today (after we sleep, of course)? It goes ’til Monday and there are lots of 2-legses dropping by and leaving links – but there’s a whole 4-leg section too. Even my picture is included. How cool is THAT? Bring a few recipes for some really great snacks, Dolly – everybody’s going for the food!

There are actually five us cats in the house (we are not counting art – those are pretty, but not live): Mama, Papa, and us three. Barmalei looks like Mama, I look like Papa (that’s Pyshka talking – she is the only one calling humans Mama and Papa), and Beba is just beautiful on her own.
We’ve already stopped by at Sally’s and brought chocolate roses, but will bring some snacks later on today, if you think it’s a good idea.

Nice to meet you, Tink. You are one cutie of a dog! We lost our last one, Angel, about a month ago – Hubs says no more (at our age) so I am living vicariously with NuNu, a black Lab adopted by some friends of ours. He is the most laid back fellow…

    • Nice to meet you too, Noelle. I’m sorry you are sad about Angel. Mom has a bunch of angel dogs on her Christmas tree. She says she still misses them all and that I’d better live as long as she does! I’m glad you have NuNu to play with.

Did you go read the Rainbow Bridge poem? It’s a nice reminder that Angel is not really gone and you will see her again. That’s where my cousins are waiting for us.

See you soon at Sally’s party!

My little dog The Bean occasionally hijacks my blog and she has asked me (because she says her paws are a little hot and bothered today) to type a reply. She agrees with everything you say (including the bit about banning jokes about yippy yappy dogs – she only barks when she has something useful to say which, some days is a lot because she is very smart). She also wants to wish all their canine chums and pals a happy dog day and she has asked me to share your blog post on her facebook page. Which I will try to do 🙂

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mom run at all – ever. She dances sometimes, but usually walks, and not all that fast (when she ever gets up from the darned computer, that is).

I had a surprise guest yesterday (Mom’s friend Jason brought Xander for me) – so she didn’t even clean or anything. She did put some coffee in the nuker – after the wine part.

But that chicken without its head sounds really scary. I’d hide if I were you.

        • Mom doesn’t eat bread hardly because of some kind of gluten – so we don’t get toast much here. She hides our chickens in a big pot with carrots and celery — and saves the pot water in the freezer. THEN I get a really *good* dinner for a change. Those health chunks she usually puts in my bowl may be good for me but they sure aren’t GOOD.
