Quotes of all flavors for Halloween

Setting the Scene for Halloween

Happy Halloween from the ADD Poster Girl,
Madelyn Griffith-Haynie, CTP, CMC, MCC, SCAC

Ghosts-500x312

For these beings, fall is ever the normal season,
the only weather, there be no choice beyond.
Where do they come from? The dust.
Where do they go? The grave.

Does blood stir their veins? No: the night wind.
What ticks in their head? The worm.
What speaks from their mouth? The toad.
What sees from their eye? The snake.
What hears with their ear? The abyss between the stars.

They sift the human storm for souls, eat flesh of reason,
fill tombs with sinners.
They frenzy forth….Such are the autumn people.
~
  Ray Bradbury

A Little Bit More Atmosphere

There was a time, [Henderson] reflected,
when the coming of this night meant something.
A dark Europe, groaning in superstitious fear,
dedicated this Eve to the grinning Unknown.
A million doors had once been barred against the evil visitants,
a million prayers mumbled, a million candles lit.
There was something majestic about the idea.
Robert Bloch,
American Fantastic Tales:
Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to the Pulps

Nothing beats a haunted moonlit night on All Hallows Eve….
And on this fatal night, at this witching time,
the starless sky laments black and unmoving.
The somber hues of an ominous, dark forest
are suddenly illuminated under the emerging face of the full moon.
~ Kim Elizabeth

and only the moon howls.

There is something haunting in the light of the moon;
it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul,
and something of its inconceivable mystery.
~
Joseph Conrad

A house is never still in darkness to those who listen intently;
there is a whispering in distant chambers,
an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch rises.
Ghosts were created when the first man awoke in the night.

Halloween wraps fear in innocence,
As though it were a slightly sour sweet.
Let terror, then, be turned into a treat…
 ~ Nicholas Gordon

There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people:
religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.
~
Linus Van Pelt, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Without me, Transylvania will be as exiting as Bucharest

‘haunted’,
or ‘forbidden’ in the title.
~

It’s about the CANDY!

halloween_ghosts_Candy

There is a child in every one of us
who is still a trick-or-treater
looking for a brightly-lit front porch.
~
Robert Brault

October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets
and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins….
Merry October!
~
Rainbow Rowell, Attachments

Those seemingly interminable
dark walks between houses,
long before street-lit safety became an issue,
were more adrenalizing than
the mountains of candy filling the sack.
~
Lauren Springer

Nothing on Earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night.
~

Being in a band you can wear whatever you want –
it’s like an excuse for Halloween everyday.
~
Gwen Stefani

I think if human beings had genuine courage,
they’d wear their costumes every day of the year,
not just on Halloween . . .
Think of all the people you’d meet if they were in costume every day.
People would be so much easier to talk to – like talking to dogs
~
Douglas Coupland, The Gum Thief

Acting is like a Halloween mask that you put on.
~
River Phoenix

I see my face in the mirror and go,
‘I’m a Halloween costume?
That’s what they think of me?’

In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year
when a girl can dress up like a total slut
and no other girls can say anything else about it.
~
  from Mean Girls

Designers of women’s Halloween costumes
must admit that they’re not even trying.
They just choose a random profession,
like nurse or referee,
and put the word “sexy” in front of it,
thereby perpetuating the idea of Halloween as a day
when normally shy women
release their inner sluts
and parade around like vixens . . .
and I just completely forgot what I was complaining about.
~
Bill Maher, The New New Rules:
A Funny Look At How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass

We could all wear masks all the time.
Then we could walk around and get to know each other
before we got to see what we looked like under the masks.
~

Proof of our society’s decline is that Halloween
has become a broad daylight event for many.
~
Robert Kirby

Sadly, Halloween,
with our good-natured attempts
to protect the little ones from the
increasingly dangerous traffic
and increasingly sick adults,
has become an utter bore.
~
Lauren Springer

The farther we’ve gotten from the magic and mystery of our past,
the more we’ve come to need Halloween.
~  Paula Curan

There were glowing pumpkins and ghost lights in the yard
and cheerful looking spiders and vampire posters everywhere.
This is just disgusting, Abel said in disgust,
landing on a happy mummy poster staked in the yard.
Must everything be commercialized these days?
I’m surprised the vampires don’t sparkle.
 ~
  John H. Carroll (Unholy Cow)

I’ll bet living in a nudist colony
takes all the fun out of Halloween.

Halloween was confusing.
All my life my parents said, “Never take candy from strangers!”
And then they dressed me up and said, “Go beg for it.”
I didn’t know what to do!
I’d knock on people’s doors and go,
‘Trick or treat – No thank you.’

Brain-Based (because it’s me)
