QuestionMarkGuyNOT just for ADD

  • Do you ever hear your inner voice muttering that your thoughts and actions are so scattered you surely must have undiagnosed ADD?  Have you ever had that thought about a client?
  • Is the ADD diagnosed, but things seem to keep getting worse, so you’re concerned that there might be a whole lot more going on?
  • Does short-term memory seem to be slipping?
Are you more and more frequently dropping things out, forgetting what you went into the next room to do, fumbling over names  — and nouns?  (Or, are you seeing that characteristic in a in some of your clients who are struggling?)
  • Are you noticing increasingly more “senior moments” that leave you secretly wondering if perhaps that indicates a slide into some kind of atypical, early onset Alzheimers?
  • Is your belief in yourself shaken?  Are you letting what you can’t do trump your feelings about your talents and abilities?  How about your clients?

If you even hesitated over the questions above,
you’ll want to be sure to tune in
to this week’s broadcast.

Expanding the Awareness of ADD Coaching

Although On Purpose with Karen Florence explores coaching in all its forms, on this particular segment she has invited me to talk about a coaching style I pioneered and developed over twenty years ago now — a brain-based style unusually effective with Executive Functioning challenges that has grown into an entire field of its own.

Regular readers of this blog won’t have to be told that I’m talking about the field that is known as ADD/ADHD Coaching.

You also won’t find it surprising to hear that it is the style of coaching that is most effective with what I call Attentional Spectrum challenges of ALL types, regardless of source.

(For more about sources see ABOUT Alphabet Disorders and Types of Attentional Deficits)

I hope that some of you will join us as Karen Florence and I discuss the application and benefits of ADD Coaching, and that the rest of you will jump over to Karen’s showpage to listen to the broadcast recording, once there has been time to post it.

Pseudo ADD?

The sad truth is that in today’s crazy/busy, high-tech, social marketing world, there are more items competing for attention than anybody’s brain can handle without the overwhelm of chronic distraction that negatively impacts cognitive functioning, ADD or not.

Simply put, the pace of the evolution of human neurology has not been able to keep up
with the speed with which technological advances have changed the game.

Our stress response escalates through-out the day, eroding our ability to plan, problem solve,
stay on track, and remember all of the details involved — logarithmically!

How can anybody be expected to cope with it all and remain healthy and sane, much less get anything DONE?

  • Our brains are not designed to handle what we require of them anymore.
  • Our hardware is overwhelmed by the demands of our software!
  • It’s past time to upgrade our systems!

Unfortunately, adding cognitive resources is not quite as simple a process as upgrading the memory chips in our computers!  So we ALL need to learn work-arounds — what computer geeks refer to as “hacks.”  Awareness and understanding will lead us to develop more effective ways to accomplish what we are expected to do with the very brains we were born with.

Looking through The ADD Lens™

The way I look at human behavior has been transformed through my experience as a “vanilla” coaching* pioneer who subsequently founded the ADD Coach Training field with the world’s first ADD-specific Coach Training Curriculum (the only one for years).

My approach was honed and expanded as a result of new scientific knowledge combined with my experience of the past two and a half decades of coaching and training vanilla* coaches and clients as well as ADDers
————————-
*vanilla = “unflavored” by what I call Attentional Spectrum Dysregulations, distinct from the more commonly used term, neurotypical

There ARE no “accidents”

I was forced to find a new way — a unique vantage point from which to observe a great many behavioral challenges — in an environment where I simply could not automatically embrace “the conventional wisdom” about what was behind the behaviors.  So I certainly couldn’t use it to determine what might have a positive impact on intentionality and follow-through.

  • I was also “blessed” by the dearth of information available to help me put things together.
  • I had to locate and dig through primary research and information from many, many different fields, while I conducted years of self-inflicted “one-rat studies” to find my answers.

As the result of non-stop observation and study over the past twenty-five years, I have developed a different perspective on the challenges of productivity and so-called procrastination  — especially concerning challenges stemming from over-commitment, fuzzy focus, distractibility, and an increasing need for prioritization at a level our grandparents could never have imagined!

(Not to mention our need to accommodate escalating expectations resulting from the increasing encroachment of the brutally insistent demands of new technologies like e-mail, smart phones, and social media – oh my!)

Come take advantage of what I have learned in the over-stimulation trenches.
And PLEASE, help us spread the word to your associates and loved ones.

Watch for an announcement about another broadcast during October: ADD Awareness Month!

As a graduate of ADD in the Spirit Coach Training, I am reminded daily of the brilliance of Madelyn Griffith-Haynie! Her insights and her understanding of Attention Spectrum challenges have given me incredibly practical and powerful new paradigms and tools that I use everyday for living my life more positively and effectively. Her understanding of ADD brain function is vast, but the great thing is she has the ability to translate the technical information into wonderfully “user-friendly” formats, whether for the ADD individual or for those who coach them.

Though she would never recommend this because she values community and the contributions we all make in each others lives, one could easily spend all of the time they had to devote to learning about ADD listening to her interviews and reading this one website and walk away with a great education!

    • WOW, Jeanie – what do I owe you for this amazing endorsement???

Seriously, THANKs for the feel-good, and VERY soon (now that I am “back”), I’ll be putting your willingness to listen to MORE of me to the test. BTW – ASCT will begin 1/22/13. As a former grad, you are eligible to audit, in case you forgot. TALK SOON!

If you missed this show, please make sure you listen to the tape. Madelyn does a fantastic job of taking the listener into the “world” of the ADDult. Far more than simply listing the diagnostic criteria, she helps listeners become aware of the experience of having ADD. Great ADD coach that she is, Madelyn effectively languaged the complexities of ADD so that they can be better understood. Her response to the issue of challenges and weaknesses of ADDults was spot on–that weaknesses can be minimized and strengths turned into brilliance through coaching the ADD client towards greater self-awareness and knowledge about how THEIR ADD brain works so they can design a life that works for them.

Whether you have already been diagnosed or are wondering whether you may have ADD, listen to this radio show. It will be well worth your time!

Madelyn Griffith-Haynie’s radio interview is well-worth the time to hear. Very important distinctions between ADD coaching and “regular” life coaching – she manages to convey in a way that VERY few (if any) others do, that the difference is, yes, the WAY one coaches, but the REASON one must coach in ADD Coaching Style is because the client is someone with A.D.D.! Attempting to use ordinary techniques and communication styles with A.D.D. individuals is just another “insult to injury” of which their lives are riddled.

This site is also a wealth of information, and always reflects the most current trends and advances in the scientific fields. Use it. Or lose it. What you may need to find in order to make your lives work is right here on these pages.
