What to Talk About in Your Coaching Call

Does your mind go blank . . .

the minute you call for coaching?

Part of the magic of The Client Prep Form is that, in addition to serving  as a session roadmap for you and your coach, it is startle insurance for YOU!

Since ADDers tend to have a hair-trigger startle response that shuts down thinking momentarily, I can’t encourage you strongly enough to develop the habit of USING the Client Prep Form for that reason as much as any other..

To help jumpstart your thinking process for those times you “ADD-out” – including the time it will take to make using the Prep Form a habit – print a copy of the following list and keep it in the front of your coaching notebook.

What to Talk About in Your Coaching Call

HOW YOU ARE

  • How you are feeling about yourself – good stuff and bad stuff
  • How you are looking at life in general and your life in particular
  • Your level of confidence about your ability to self-manage ADD affect
  • How your relationships are making ADD self-management easier or more difficult

 WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE LAST CALL

  • A brief rundown of the highlights of what has occurred to you since the last call
  • Project report (coaching related progress reports are best, but any project worth your time is worth mentioning)
  • Breakthroughs, insights, aha!s
  • New choices, decisions or changes of direction

 MEDICATION REPORT & MEDS CHECK-IN*

  • Re-Minder: I’m currently systematizing these meds, at these dosages, at these times
  • Compliance (1-10): how well are you doing remembering to take them?
    (1=What meds? — 10=Like clockwork)
  • Efficacy: How’s it workin’ for you? (Direct effects and “side” effects)
  • Systems: How are you doing what you are doing? (Remembering OR forgetting – where’s the link?)
  • Cause and Effect: Compare the info last section to the info in this one.  Insights?
  • New choices, decisions or changes of direction

Vital: “Don’t try this at home!” Starting, stopping, or changing dosage without your doctor
in the loop is a recipe for trouble!!!  You and your coach discuss these choices, decisions
or changes of direction to help you make things conscious and/or to develop a list to take
to your next appointment.  CALL YOUR DOCTOR before changing a thing!
(It goes without saying that you follow his or her telephone advice until you’re face-to-face
at your next meds appointment, right?)  
And take that list!

*if you are not taking medication, use this section to report on whatever you do to manage ADD
(non-pharmaceutical alternatives, vitamins, diet, sleep, exercise, etc.)

WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON

  •  Progress report on current goals, projects and activities
  •  What you’ve done that you are proud of
  •  New systems initiated/integrated that make it easier to manage life with ADD
  •  What you are coming up against you haven’t quite figured out how to handle
  •  System glitches

WHAT IS NEXT

  • Thinking aloud to help you decide which goal or project to take on next
  • The next concept or distinction to work on or embrace
  • How what you want for yourself next relates to how you see yourself now
  • Fears or concerns about what will happen at the completion of your current project

HOW YOUR COACH CAN HELP

  • Where you are stuck developing or implementing a plan of action
  • Where you are missing information about ADD that could help you better understand your experiences
  • Where you are missing a distinction or some language
  • A request for help with a strategy
  • A request for advice or an opinion to help you come to a decision
  • Jump-starting or Body Doubling
