From Chapter 1: The Concept of Boggle

Sacks on Shutdown

Oliver Sacks, a scientist fascinated with neurological differences who was brought to public attention when Robin Williams portrayed him in the screenplay Awakenings, has noted that:

“Brain systems in all animals may respond to overwhelming stimulation, or stimulation past a critical point, with a sudden shutdown.  Such reactions have nothing to do with the individual or his motives.  They are purely local and physiological and can occur even in isolated slices of [the] cerebral cortex: they are a biological defense [against] neural overload.”

Anyone who has ever been labeled “emotionally volatile” has experienced times when they have been so distracted, so overwhelmed, so UN-focused that they simply, literally, cannot get it together to function at all!  A milder version of this state is what some of the experts working with the Attention Deficit Disorder population refer to sometimes as pre-frontal cortex shutdown in response to stress.”

ANY version of that particular dynamic is what I call BOGGLE!

You are probably already familiar with Boggle.  I’ll bet you’ve been there. Although ADDers tend to experience it a lot more often, Boggle is by NO means confined to the ADD population.  The focus of my upcoming Boggle Book is to explain why it happens and to teach you how to set it up so you never need to go there again.

The techniques I developed to work with the term I coined will work for anyone.  They work for me.  They work for my clients and students.  They will also work for you, ADD or not.

Who am I to say?

I am an ADD Coach.  I have worked with Attention Deficit Disorder since 1986.  I cofounded the ADD Coaching field, was the first in the world to train and mentor ADD Coaches in an ADD-specific curriculum,  I speak nationally about ADD and am an ADD advocate.

I also coach those who do not have ADD and spent seven years training coaches to work with non-ADDers.  I use the same techniques with ALL of my clients.  They work for anyone.

They will work for YOU.

A message for ANYONE reading the excerpts of this book

  • You don’t have to have an official diagnosis to benefit from techniques that help individuals who do;
  • You don’t have to exhibit all of the challenges of ADD to allow yourselves to use the information and techniques to work on the ones you have;
  • You don’t have to split hairs when you try to determine whether the problems in your life are a product of “real” ADD or not
  • You don’t have to fall into the trap of refusing to allow yourself to reach out for help because you are not “bad enough” to deserve it.

Keep reading; keep your inner ear tuned to that little ping in your gut that is your truth geiger counter.  Nothing works for EVERYbody! Take what works and leave the rest — or throw it in the garbage.  Use the information you find to set things up to work way YOU work.

    • Will do. Those were ground-breaking years.

      ONLY a few years before those books (published at about the same time), there were VERY few lay books on ADD – I had to go to primary sources, for the most part.

      Most people fail to acknowledge (or recall) the contribution of Lynn Weiss as well – who was one of the VERY first trail-blazers — exploring and writing for her son, until she discovered that she herself was a member of the club. IMHO, her books only got better after that!

      MANY times lately I wish I had written books instead of a training manual (no royalities, which would sure come in handy NOW). I was (and probably still am) more focused on taking care of the world than taking care of myself!

    Madelyn, you are flat-out amazing! I want & need this book (even if I can’t imagine erasing _all_ boggle from my life for-ever & ever).

    MGH COMMENT: In 2015 I plan to scale blogging efforts way back, to be able to put the considerable TIME I spend there into finishing my books and getting them published. BOGGLE will be one of the first.

    Even more so, I could use a serious ADD pep talk. I’m standing at the threshold of real career possibility (hope, hope, hope, and with career coaching), but still feel hellaciously limited in my ability to actually pick up my ball of personal potential and run with it. I am intent on a path toward teaching music at the secondary level, but feel greatly outclassed (!) and in-over-my-head in terms of the sheer scope of _managing_ self, stuff, and others (namely, the learners!).

    As is common with ‘the tribe’, I have energy and ideas, but am easily (and often) derailed from what plans I do make- along with the usual losses of perspective, self-doubt (& self-flagellation, scars to prove it).

    Am scheduling as many informational interviews as might benefit me (maybe add YOU to that list?), and generally trying to keep above the water line and on the good path. Oh, and SANE! :0

    AND here I am asking for help in PUBLIC, no less, so I’m either off the proverbial deep end OR I’m doing something halfway right for myself.

    • Nah! – admitting we need help IN PUBLIC is a sign of self-acceptance and strength! We ALL need help – IMHO, we are designed for community, not soldiering on alone. So my thinking is that you are doing something VERY right for yourself!

      Unfortunately, your timing is a bit off in reaching out to ME. Thanks to the nasty events of 2014, I’ve run through practically all reserves of cash and time – so I need to shift the balance of time spent helping others until my own life gets back on track. (14 months is a long time to have no income – especially when one’s expenses have dramatically increased in the same time-frame!)

      AS A RESULT, free support will have to be limited to what I’ve written here already so that I have the TIME to re-establish my a coaching/training practice, and get my books finished and published so that I have an income stream that doesn’t trade time for cash – or I’m risking living under a bridge, unable to help ANYone

        Thank you, Madelyn – it just sucks outright for you to be set so far back like this. I will be reading the Boggle excerpts (and other series) avidly. Remember, of course, that Mr. Reese has your back on an as-needed basis. 😉

            OK, slightly (ha!) off-topic, but I’ve missed most of them. There was a bizarre Groundhog Day-ish episode where three scenarios play out with Reese, Finch, and Root each getting shot down. I need to -try- to catch up online somehow or other. Pray for light and peace all through your 2015. 🙂
