As I said in the first part of this post
(which you can read if you click HERE)

. . . regardless of “niche,” when you take the time to look closely, most coaches tend to attract clients in “categories” focused around similar types of challenges.


In addition to the challenge profiles I described in Part One of this article, here are a few more of the “categories” that my clients have had in common over the past couple of decades.

Steppin’ on UP!

In the sharp lens of hindsight, I can see that I am especially effective coaching clients over a chasm that can best be described as people who have reached a plateau, ready to go for it, but not exactly sure what that might entail:

  • Professionals ready for advancement that would require a change in their sense of self as well as a change in work logistics and environment
  • Good performers with hidden greatness, the “under-achievers” who aren’t sure what they need to do to step up their game
  • “Problem employees” tired of being thought of that way, with a hazy understanding of how they got that reputation to begin with, since “everybody does the same things I do.”

Learning “to play well with others”

I also work very well with former “lone rangers” who need to develop team building or networking skills, or individuals who need to learn to work in an environment that is unfamiliar, with a group that seems “strange and different:”

  • The newly employed, or the newly promoted
  • Individuals adjusting to restructuring and/or changes in leadership and upper management paradigm shifts
  • Individuals changing jobs for the first time (or the first time in a long time), or those re-entering the workforce after a period away from it (regardless of reason, but often former stay-at-home parents)
  • Those tasked with making a success of a start-up in small or solo-preneur environments where they suddenly find themselves the “face” of their organization in unfamiliar arenas (frequently in arenas they formerly avoided but could no longer).

“Self Re-Inventors”

For example:

  • Changing of the guard in family businesses: whether my client is the patriarch/matriarch stepping away or the adult child taking over — needs, boundaries, standards, expectations and effective communication need to be looked at in new ways if everybody expects to stay loving and friendly through what is supposed to be a GOOD thing!
  • “CREATIVES” in transition:  After transitioning from my first career (over twenty years as an actor and director) — not to mention subsequent transitions from consultant to coach to coach trainer to ADD advocate, etc. — I’m a natural fit for Entrepreneurs or SOHO execs, and “Creatives” in transition from one phase of their field to another.

Some examples?
• Dancer to choreographer, actor to director — any “doer” to agent or manager for “doers”

• Visual artists opening a gallery, or well-known chefs opening their own restaurants
• The “overnight sensations” — Creatives who “suddenly” find themselves attracting public attention, eager to maintain personal life balance as they leverage the opportunities of notoriety in ways congruent with their values

  • Sidetracked Home Executives  — leaving the formal workplace to step onto the Mommy/Daddy Track

Yes, we agree it is the most important work on the planet – but that doesn’t change the head-trip due to the self-identity and self-esteem impact (even if it was your idea, a welcomed change, and everything you’ve always wanted).  If the children are going to grow up to be the best that they can be, the primary parents need to “put their own oxygen masks on” BEFORE attempting to strap ’em on the kids!

THEN there is the “getting it all done” issue:
Besides the insistent yearning to have regular conversations about ANYTHING besides the latest cartoon character, nap-time, or potty-training, once you are away from the externally imposed structure of an office (smack-dab in the middle of 24/7 home management accountability), how in the world do you set up systems and structures so that YOU don’t get eaten alive?

How do you handle the “WHAT have you DONE all day?” question
— besides duct tape over the offender’s mouth, I mean?  Seriously, how can you manage unrealistic expectations when YOU don’t even know what “realistic” expectations ARE for this new role you’ve taken on?

So Why THESE Bins?

As I said in the introductory post, what these various individuals have in common has more to do with how I work than what they are working on.  I have more than 20 years of  research into “brain-based fields” and experience with ADD particularly.  I have earned my reputation as “the world’s best coach” for individuals who have to figure out how to drive their own brains IN ADDITION to solving the challenges of the personal transition that brought them to coaching in the first place.
